From Afghanistan, Iran to even Bhutan and Russia: Trump’s proposed new travel ban may hit up to 43 countries
15Mar.2025
A new ‘red’ list
At the core of the proposed plan is a “red” list of 11 countries whose citizens would be outright banned from entering the United States. According to officials, this list includes
1)Afghanistan,
2)Bhutan,
3)Cuba,
4)Iran,
5)Libya,
6)North Korea,
7)Somalia,
8)Sudan,
9)Syria
10)Venezuela,
11)Yemen.
More targetted restrictions
In addition to the total bans, the proposal outlines an “orange” list of 10 countries for which travel would be restricted but not completely cut off. Citizens of these nations —
1)Belarus,
2)Eritrea,
3)Haiti,
4)Laos,
5)Myanmar,
6)Pakistan,
7)Russia,
8)Sierra Leone,
9)South Sudan,
10)Turkmenistan
— would face stricter vetting procedures and mandatory in-person visa interviews.
A ‘yellow’ warning
The draft proposal also includes a “yellow” list of 22 countries given 60 days to address perceived security deficiencies in order to avoid restrictions. These countries — largely in Africa and the Caribbean — include
1)Angola,
2)Antigua
3)Benin,
4)Burkina Faso,
5)Cameroon,
6)Cape Verde,
7)Chad,
8)the Republic of Congo,
9)the Democratic Republic of Congo,
10)Dominica,
11)Equatorial Guinea,
12)Gambia,
13)Liberia,
14)Malawi,
15)Mali,
16)Mauritania,
17)St. Kitts and Nevis,
18)St. Lucia,
19)São Tomé and Príncipe,
20)Vanuatu,
21) Zimbabwe.
22)Barbuda,
The Trump administration has cited concerns that these nations fail to adequately share information about travellers with the US or have lax security practices when issuing passports, which could allow individuals from banned countries to exploit loopholes. The yellow list offers these countries a narrow window to cooperate with US authorities or risk being placed on a more restrictive list.
